About Us

Orthopaedics was coined in the eighteenth century from two Greek words for "straight" and "child" by Nicholas Andry, a French physician. Orthopaedics was at its origin a specialty for the prevention and correction of the deformities of children.

In contemporary terms, orthopaedics is a medical specialty concerned with diseases, injuries, and other conditions of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system consists of the body's bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Many skin and wound problems are also managed by orthopaedic surgeons.

Background

The demand for orthopaedics as a specialized medical service is high. The incidence of trauma during work or traffic is frequent in a metropolitan city. The elderly population is in need of sophisticated solutions for their degenerative problems. In addition, as health, fitness and exercise are recognized as part of life nowadays, sports medicine is particularly important to help people keep fit and injury-free.

The Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre is established on 5th March 2004 in Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. It is the first and only facility in Hong Kong's private hospitals, in response to the demand for comprehensive services in orthopaedics and sports medicine. It aims to provide complete health care and preventive treatment for a variety of disorders, including trauma and tumours.

The Centre has orthopaedic specialists who are leading experts in such fields as tumour management, hand, upper limb and microsurgery, sports medicine, joint replacement and spine. The Centre also works with other departments of the Hospital to bring the best possible medical care to patients. We are committed to upgrading the quality of life of patients by helping them to restore or to maximize their physical potential.
