Orthopaedics was coined in the eighteenth century from two Greek words for "straight" and "child" by Nicholas Andry, a French physician. Orthopaedics was at its origin a specialty for the prevention and correction of the deformities of children.

In contemporary terms, orthopaedics is a medical specialty concerned with diseases, injuries, and other conditions of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system consists of the body's bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Many skin and wound problems are also managed by orthopaedic surgeons.
